Who are the Mountain People
Shall I tell you true?
The Mountain People are all around
The Mountain People are Me and You
My Mother was born among the West Virginia Hills
And while I was young she taught me all about the Mountain’s thrills
My Father’s folks were born across the water
But he wanted the freedom of the Mountains for his sons and daughter
Mountain folks are all around
Here in Maine they do abound
Even those born on the flat
Know that the Mountains are where it’s at
The tourist comes and the tourist goes
But every Mainer surely knows
That the Mountains will always bring
Those who love the wild things
Now those with power will surely try
To make the Mountains drop and die
But it simply can’t be done
Because we’re Mountain People, every one
They know that if the Mountains die
We must fall in line—You and I
But as long as there’s a wild place
We can fight them, face to face
From our Mountains we draw a power
Grander than their ivory tower
We can speak to God and hear His voice
For us there really is no choice
Those who would destroy the land
Those who wield the heavy hand
They really haven’t got a clue
About the power entrusted to Me and You
The time is coming when we must
Stand up for what is right and just
We can’t let them mow us down
Destroy our Mountains and our towns
For if they kill our our sacred places
We will be yoked into our traces
Over us the they will all ride rough shod
Made slaves of those who have no God
But Mountain People surely know
That we can’t let it end just so
To the end we’ll surely fight
‘Cause Mountain People know what’s right
I have wandered far out on the land
And I have felt God’s loving hand
I’ve seen the sunshine and the storm
Felt winter’s cold and summer’s warm
I’ve known men, and women too
Who would give their life for me and you
Give their life to protect this land
An extension of God’s loving hand
Finer people can’t be found
Than those who live close to the ground
They know the truth, they’ve felt the light
And for us all they’ll always fight
But I’ve also known men who were evil through
Didn’t give a damn for me and you
Didn’t care about the land
Simply used the heavy hand
These men all thought they had a right
To make us walk in to the night
To make us all into their slaves
To treat us all like foolish knaves
I’m here to say it won’t be so
‘Cause Mountain People aren’t slow
They can tell darkness from the light
And they will fight for what is right
So next time you wonder who they are
You won’t have to look too far
The Mountain People surely stand
In the mirror in your hand
Just decide to do what’s right
Dedicate your soul to the fight
Mountain People can’t be bought
So be always proud of how you fought
And when the day draws to an end
And truth and justice you did defend
You can stand up tall and proud
As we proclaim, good and loud
WE ARE MOUNTAIN PEOPLE!
I am a Mountain Person. I grew up with the view of Mt. Katahdin from our home. I roamed around the ridges above the Lincoln Lakes that have now been destroyed. First Wind “Didn’t care about the land/Simply used the heavy hand”. Destroyed for a folly and greed. David, thank you again for another wonderful poem. We Mountain People must say “No More Rollins”!!!
“No more Rollins!”
That’s right, Brad. We need to stand together to say “NO MORE!”
We are Mountain People, and we are AMERICANS!
It’s time to put an end to this!

I am a mountain person and I will stand up tall and be counted as a warrior.
Great poem, Dave. Thank you!
what gets me is that the ones that was running the state didnot give a dam about maine like king and bald assi who sold the state down the drain and over ruled all others like dep, lurc judges , and the courts made them all go to bed with the wind industy. they did not give a dam what the people had to say, they was not going to give up the money that the wind paid them ,they steped on the peoples rights and push them aside like they was dirt ,so they could line their greedy pockets yet they still live in maine thinking they are heros , we will see what heros they are when the biggest maine trade stops an kill the state, wind says they are creating lots of jobs in the town they are in ,lies lies where are all the jobs and money being spent now with the mills up ? will they have jobs and bring money in to the same towns that they where in year after year like the tourist ,hunters and fishermen do every year you know dam well they willnot , like mt katahdin people goo there to see the view now all the will see is mills all around oh great view ,they are out of mass. how come you donot see any down there ? may they vaule their mts. more .
Thanks for the lovely poem, David. I become a mountaineer each summer from June thru September. I have been leaving my great place on an Island in GA to come to Maine to enjoy the mountains and the forests and the mountaineers of ME and the beautiful lakes and mtns. What a disaster that we have allowed the ones who don’t recognize the worth of the mtns to deform and damage our world. My husband and I came the first time to spend the summer in Maine in 1979 and I have been coming every summer since that time. My husband was deceased in 1995 and I am truly sorry that he didn’t live long enough to help us rout out the disrespectful builders of the wind turbines.
Stand tall and pround, Folks.
Our day is coming!

Good poem, Dave. People need to realize that it is OK to speak out against the corporate rip off artists. When they have such a head start it makes it hard, but we will prove it is not impossible.
