The Ides Of March

With the ups and downs that have come this winter, and that promise to continue for some time yet—it was time for another poem.

Mark my words, folks: We’ve got them on the run, and we ARE GOING TO WIN THIS FIGHT!

DC

The Ides Of March is an uncertain, middle time, for those who live in Maine

We might see snow, we might see cold–almost sure we’ll see some rain

This year though, the way things go, we all will see some pain.

See some pain for what has come—see some pain for what is here

Know the pain of the people of Maine, as they watch their life-blood disappear

Feel the terrible sickness that comes, with the destruction of the Mountains they hold so dear

The Rollins Project presses on—turbines rising to the sky

Sisk is standing next in line, a sacred ridgeline doomed to die

Spruce and Bowers, Saddleback and Highland, and so many others—all know their time is nigh

“Beware the Ides Of March,” was told a powerful man, so long ago

He brushed it off, to his great loss, because he simply didn’t know

Did not believe that things foretold—that things predicted could be so

The Ides Of March this very year, will be a painful time

But things will change, things will improve—the wise will mark my rhyme

Another year will pass, and many things will change—The Ides of March 2012, will be a brighter time

For even as the assault goes on—even as the turbines rise

Many are working to spread the truth, a truth that will not compromise

We’ll tell the truth, and demand the truth, and make them look us in the eyes

When the truth is told, there are none so bold, but will have to come around

For the truth is strong, and those who are wrong, know they stand not on solid ground

There will come a day, not too far away, when the laws and the policies will become more sound

Beware The Ides Of March, all ye who read my rhyme

Those who this year are feeling pain—will be well again, in time

But those who would destroy our land, one year from now, will leave without a dime

Those who would destroy our Maine—in the name of ‘common good’

Will find themselves out in the cold, as all dishonest persons should

And those who now are feeling pain, will once more walk in the healing wood

    Oh, Corrigan– thank you.

Your dedication to Maine gives us all hope and courage.

By the way… isn’t there a birthday coming up for a certain ‘wind poet laureate’? Mayhaps on March 17th, Saint Patty’s Day?

For some reason, that date stuck in my mind….

  2. No thanks for me, Karen. Like you, and so many others—I just do what I can. Each of us just doing what we are able, no matter how much or how little that is, is what is winning this fight.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that we are right! :)

As for March 17th……… You’ve got to stop talking to the Leprechauns! :)

David, the third stanza made me cry, as it reminded me once again that the wind juggernaut has momentum and there have been many casualties and you list only the latest. May you be a wise soothsayer and that 2012 will indeed be true as you foresee. Count me in as your constant comrade in this struggle! And may hundreds of others who love Maine’s mountains join in!

what gets me they lie cheat and break all the laws ,and get away with it , but the ones who thy to stop them get arrested , while they still get away , about time the dead heads that think they are going to save the world get their heads out of frist winds ass and wake up and see what they are doing to our state, they are killing it wind will not replace , the money the state will lose from tourist hunters fishermen and other actives, ihave been here when people loved the state of maine and never thought of killing the state then you get the ones who think they are god and going to change every thing , like king baldassi and all their stooges they will never change a thing with wind 82 year old jail bird

  5. Brad, you are not the only one who has cried lately. All those who love Maine’s Mountains, and Maine’s wild heritage have shed tears at the needless destruction that is unfolding. Many who depend on that very heritage for their living are facing the end of their businesses, and many who depend on that heritage for their physical, spiritual, and emotional well being, are facing dark days and the prospect of loosing all that is sacred to them.

    These are indeed dark days.

But the momentum of the ‘wind juggernaught,’ is slowing, and the momentum of those demanding truth and honesty, is gaining every day. You are, and have been, a part of that. You, and thousands of others—some of them quite vocal….some less so, but all now making a push for the truth, rather than the feel good promises, and dishonest dealings that have led us to this point.

OUR momentum is gaining, and we WILL soon turn the tide. All it takes is honest men and women standing shoulder to shoulder and demanding that we all do the right thing!

  6. Right on , Don!

When people loose respect for the land, and the traditions, they can do some crazy things.

But most people are honest, at heart, and when they realize the truth about Wind Developments, and the fact that it can never replace what it is destroying, they will come around. They have come around….. And now they are demanding that our State Government fix the problems that it set in motion.

Mark my words: things WILL get better!

  7. did you see the room? standing room only. 53 speakers. at least 10 new ones.
you are right. we will fight. we have fighters fighting for rights
we cannot thank each other enough. that is a good thing

  8. Alice,

As much as it hurt to see the indifference in the faces of the DEP Staff at that meeting—– The energy in that room was AMAZING! The PEOPLE have awakened, and the PEOPLE are demanding the truth!

I know for a fact that for every brave soul who spoke up the other night, there are hundreds, if not thousands more, just waiting in the wings for thing to change for the better.

And as they all find their voices and speak up, THINGS WILL GET BETTER!

The days of the Wind Scammer’s run in Maine are coming to an end!

  9. Connie Henderson says:

We are an old (not just older) couple and we have had to give up meetings in far places but still speaking it out every where we go. Some do listen, now more than not. Yesterday a man from Maine Reliability came to inform us that they will be cutting the extra 83′ that didn’t show as theirs (CMP) all these 30 years. My husband actually bush hog and cut trees for them on the lines adjacent to our land for free so they would not spray. I had had cancer just after I came here. We will face, possibly, a 345′ + 115′ tower literally in our back yard. Our area of line has been singled out for early cut (before April 15)because DEP wants to protect the wadding birds!!!! The Eastern Cougar in our area was just called extinct though I have seen him(I am an artist and know a Cougar). People have fairly recent photos. UMaine wild life person said his range was Troy to Frankfort. All this to say thanks for your work and to all others who know the truth and are not as afraid of BIG BUSINESS as they are of losing their integrity.

  10. Thank you, Connie.

People need to know what is going on in this State. There is a lot that isn’t right, and only by speaking up, can we make it right.

And as forthe Eastern Cougar being ‘extinct’: Anyone who actually believes that, hasn’t spent much time in the woods!

Don’t ever give up, and don’t ever stop speaking out!

Yay you know this just in when I needed it the most. Have you watched the film yet? Oh I think the Ides of March is the best that ever happened to Ryan Gosling’s career.
